What is a bed and breakfast (B&B)?
A bed and breakfast is a private home with a few rooms available for tourists. Typically the price of one night’s stay, includes a full breakfast the next morning. Benefits of staying in a B&B is that the accommodation is usually more quaint, more comfortable, quieter and unique compared to a large hotel. Many tourists also appreciate the personal attention from the host, and opportunity to meet other interesting guests from the around the world in a homey setting.
At Greystone Manor B&B we offer 4 guest rooms, a common living room and a common dining room where we provide a full, hot breakfast in the morning served family style. The atmosphere has been described by other guests as warm, friendly, and comfortably elegant.
How does a B&B compare to a hotel?
With only 4 guest rooms in a private residence our B&B offers you a personal, unique experience and is quieter then a large busy hotel. You can choose to interact with your hosts and other guests, or enjoy quiet time in your room or other common areas of the property.
Will we have our own bathroom?
Yes, all of our guest rooms have their own private bathroom. Three of the bathrooms are en suite (Jade, Opal and Topaz) while the Pearl guest room has a private bathroom across the hall.
What size of beds do you have?
All four of our guest rooms are equipped with queen-size beds, accommodating 2 guests per room.
Do I have to remove my shoes inside?
This is our home, so it would appreciated if you would remove your shoes in the front hall. We suggest to bring slippers so that your feet stay warm and are not bare.
Is smoking permitted?
Greystone Manor is a smoke-free facility and there is no smoking indoors. Smoking is permitted outdoors on the verandah and balcony.
Is there a curfew?
No. You may come and go as you please. We ask that if you are arriving late at night to be respectful to other guests that may be staying with us.
Is there a telephone in our room?
No. Guests are welcome to use the telephones found in the foyer or lounge area. We offer free local and long-distance calling to any North American destination. If making overseas call, we ask our guests to use a calling card or credit card.
Will we have a Jacuzzi or jetted tub, or a hot tub?
No. The Jade room is the only guest room we have that offers a regular soaker tub.
Can I connect to the internet from your B&B?
Yes. We offer free, secure Wi-Fi access throughout the property. If you require printing services (e.g. boarding passes) we have a laptop that guests may use.
Does our room have air conditioning?
Yes. Each of the guest rooms has its own air conditioning controls so that you can have the room at the right temperature for you.
Is there a TV in our room?
Three of our guest rooms (Jade, Opal and Topaz) have a 19" flat panel TV mounted to the wall. These TVs also have built-in DVD players.
Do you supply toiletries?
We have dispensers in the showers which offer Ivory brand bodywash and Pert brand 2 in 1 shampoo and conditioner. Each of the bathrooms is equipped with hair blow-dryers.
Can we use the kitchen?
No. The kitchen is off limits to guests due to health regulations. All of our guest rooms rooms come equipped with a mini refrigerator. The Topaz room also has a microwave oven.
When is breakfast served?
Breakfast is served at 9:00 a.m. in the dining room.
Can we have breakfast early if we have to leave to catch our flight?
We try to accommodate all early breakfast requests. Depending on the time of your departure we may not be able to offer the full breakfast, but will provide you with a continental breakfast.
What type of breakfast is served? Will I see a menu?
We offer a full breakfast including, fresh fruit bowl, fresh baked good (e.g. scones, muffins, croissants), hot entrees (e.g. eggs Benedict with potato pancakes, pancakes with scrambled eggs and sausages, stuffed French toast with bacon), yoghurt, assorted beverages (coffee, tea, orange juice.)
We do not provide a menu. We change our breakfasts daily and serve the same breakfast to everyone (of course making adjustments for allergies and dietary restrictions.)
Can our special dietary needs (e.g. vegetarian, gluten-free) be accommodated?
We do our best to accommodate all dietary restrictions.
Can we have breakfast delivered to our room or on the patio?
No. We encourage interaction among our guests and the best way to do this is at a common breakfast in the dining room.
Do you accept children?
We accept well-behaved children. It should be noted that our B&B guest rooms are restricted to 2 persons per room and this includes children. This means that a family of 3 would need to reserve 2 guest rooms.
Do you accept pets?
No. We are a pet-free facility.
Why do you ask for our arrival time? Does it matter when we check in?
We ask for your arrival time so that we can plan our daily chores. Typically, guests choose to check in between 4:00 p.m. - 6:00 p.m. at which time we serve tea and cookies and are here to answer questions. We try to be here to greet all of our guests, but at the same time, we need to do shopping, run errands and also have other work to do. If you would like to check in before 4:00 p.m. or after 6:00 p.m. any time after 2:00 p.m is possible and an express self check in can be arranged to suite your needs.
What if we need to arrive early or check out late?
We do our best to accommodate early check-ins. However, if your room isn't ready upon your arrival, you are welcome to register and leave your luggage at the B&B we will transfer it to your room when it is ready.
During the peak summer months, we will need you to vacate your guest room by 11:00 a.m. However, you are more than welcome to use the lounge area or store your luggage here while you continue to enjoy the sites.
What if we need to cancel after making a reservation?
We have a 72 hour cancellation policy. If you cancel 72 hours or more before your check-in, you may cancel penalty-free. If you booked online, you can return to our reservations page and click on the "cancel reservation" button at the bottom of the page. You will be asked for your reservation number, email address and guest's secret code. Alternatively, you may email or call Greystone Manor and we will complete the cancellation for you.
Reservations cancelled less than 72 hours before check-in, will result in a charge equivalent to one night's stay.
What forms of payment do you accept?
We accept cash (CAD or USD), VISA, MasterCard. We do not accept personal cheques nor traveller's cheques.
Is there a minimum number of nights we have to stay?
No, and our policy does not change because of holidays or peak season.
Do you have on-site parking?
Yes. We have ample free parking at the back of our property accessed off Simcoe Street. Please come around the side of the building to the main entrance in the front.
FAQ - Travel Information
Do I need a passport or visa to come to Canada?
Basically yes, you will need a passport or an enhanced driver's license to travel to Canada. If you are from the United States you are required to have a passport to return home. So while you don't technically need a passport to enter Canada, the Canadian Customs and Immigration requires you to have a passport so that you will be able to return to the United States.

Can I cross the Rainbow Bridge to see both sides of Niagara Falls?
Yes, with proper documentation. Because the Rainbow Bridge is an international border separating Canada and the United States, you will need to have a passport and possibly a visa to enter either country.
With the correct documentation, you are permitted to walk across the bridge (a $0.50 toll is collected when leaving Canada.) If driving across, a $3.50 toll is collected when leaving the United States.

Is there train or bus service to Niagara Falls?
Via Rail Train Station (Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada) is located on the north side of Bridge Street at Erie Avenue, approximately 0.9 km (0.6 miles) from Greystone Manor. There are 3 train services to this station: Via Rail, Amtrack and GoTransit (commuter train to Toronto)
Greyhound Bus Terminal (Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada) is located on the west side of Erie Avenue at Bridge Street, approximately 0.9 km (0.6 miles) from Greystone Manor. There are 4 bus services to this terminal: Coach Canada, Greyhound Buses, Megabus and GoTransit (commuter service to Toronto.)
What money (currency) do you use?
Canada has its own currency (Canadian dollar). You may find that many of the businesses will also accept US dollars (at varying exchange rates), but you will receive your change in Canadian funds.
Please note that Canada uses $1 (loonies) and $2 (twoonies) coins not bank notes. It has been recently announced that the pennies $0.01 will no longer be made starting the fall of 2012.” Should be “The Canadian Mint has discontinued distributing pennies ($0.01) effective February 2013. Cash transactions will be rounded to the nearest nickel ($0.05). Credit and debit card transactions will not be rounded.
Canada is currently changing all of their bank notes from paper to a polymer. The new $100 polymer notes were released in March, 2011; the $50 notes will be released in spring of 2012; $20 notes are scheduled for release late in 2012. The $10 and $5 notes are scheduled for late 2013.
Where can I exchange my money to Canadian dollars?
There are many banks and money exchangers conveniently located around Niagara Falls. You can also use your bank card to withdraw funds from your bank account at the current exchange rate. (Regular bank service charges may apply.)
We have found that one of the best exchange rates is actually at the casinos.
Will my US cellphone work in Canada?
If you stay near the river (international border), you can usually pick up all of the major US carriers (Sprint, Verizon, AT&T, etc.) Watch your phone to see whether or not you are roaming as additional charges may apply.

How big are Niagara Falls?
The Horseshoe Falls has a water fall of 53 metres (173 feet) to the pool at the base of the Falls and is 670m (2,200 feet) in width.
The speed of the Niagara River at the crest of the Horseshoe Falls is 20-22 miles per hour (32-35km/h). Ninety (90%) percent of all the river water flows over the Horseshoe Falls.
The Bridal Veil Falls and the American Falls has a total crest line of 326 m (1,100 feet) in width and has a height of 56m (182 feet).
It should be noted that the height of the Falls vary by season and waterflow. The higher the waterflow, the shallower the Falls are.
Are Niagara Falls the tallest falls?
No. There are at least 500 other falls that are taller. However, in terms of volume of water, Niagara Falls is in the top 10.
How much water flows over Niagara Falls?
Today, on average, there are 2,271,250 litres/sec (600,000 gal/sec) going over the Falls during daylight hours. Up to 50% of the water upstream of the Falls is diverted to the hydro-electric power stations on both the Canadian and US sides of the Niagara River. It has been over 100 years since the Niagara Falls has been at full flow.
Do they shut off the Falls at night?
No, but the flow is significantly reduced. There is an agreement in place between Canada and the United States specifying how much water flow can be diverted to the hydro-electric power stations during peak tourist season (April - October) and variations between daytime and nighttime hours.
How much electricity is generated by the hydro-electric power stations?
The amount of electricity the power plants at Niagara Falls have the capacity to output is close to 4.9 million kilowatts. That's enough to power 3.8 millions homes.
The Canadian side's combined capacity is close to 2.2 million kilowatts, while on the US side, plants have a capacity of roughly 2.7 million Kilowatts.
How old are Niagara Falls?
Essentially, the Niagara Falls starting at the Whirlpool was created about 5,500 years ago with the meltwaters of receding glaciers.
Why is the colour of the Falls that blue/green colour?
The water is naturally blue/green in colour. That colour changes daily with the weather and the amount of sediment in the water.
The water colour is caused by two sources: sunlight refraction and diatoms in the water (microscopic plants such as algae and plankton in the water).
After storms in the area or even Lake Erie, the water becomes murky brown. This is caused by the bottom sediment being stirred up and being carried in the water.
What is the foam on the river at the bottom of the Falls?
What you are seeing is the result of decaying organics. The same algae plants and diatoms that give the water its fluorescent colour also contribute to the greyish foam you see floating on it. The waters of the Niagara, rich in dissolved calcium (in the form of calcium carbonate, from dissolved limestone bedrock) reacts with the organics in the water (from decaying plant and animal material) creating a sticky substance. The turbulence from the Falls and the rapids creates foam out of it. The foam isn't very stable and it tends to dissolve within minutes, only to be replenished by more.
Where did Niagara Falls get its name?
The word “Onguiaahra” appears on maps as early as 1641. Both it, and the later version “Ongiara”, are Native words generally interpreted as meaning “The Strait” or “Great Throat”, although the more romantic “Thunder of Waters” is sometimes given. By the time the first white man arrived at the Falls, the name in general use was “Niagara”.
Do I have to pay to see the Falls?
No, there are no fees nor admission prices to get into Niagara Parks. You can get right up to the walls along the Falls and the Niagara River Gorge where there are great photo opportunities.
The only admissions you would need to pay is for any of the attractions, such as Hornblower Canada boat tours, Journey Behind the Falls, etc. There are also fees for parking near the Falls.
Are the Falls illuminated every night?
Yes, the Falls are illuminated every night, although the hours may change between summer and winter seasons. Currently a total of twenty-one xenon lights, each with a 76-cm (30 in) diameter, are used to illuminate the Falls in a rainbow of colours. Eighteen are located at the Illumination Tower, beside the Queen Victoria Place and three are located below street level in the gorge opposite the American Falls. Each of the xenon spotlights produces more than 390 million peak beam and has a brilliance of 250 million candlepower.
Are there fireworks every night?
